What Is Brow Lamination? Explaining The Treatment Process

Do you love the way your brows look after they’re finally put together in the morning, but wish you didn't have to take the extra time out of your day to get them to look like they should? In fact, wouldn't it be great to just have eyebrows that are perfectly placed all the time? If you’re looking for low maintenance brows, but aren't sure about the whole microblading process, consider a simple brow lamination to keep your eyebrows looking perfectly manicured.

What is brow lamination?

Most of us know what a perm is, right? Well, think of a brow lamination treatment as a sort of eyebrow perm – just without the curls.

This process is a semi permanent treatment that uses a set of gentle chemical solutions to break down the proteins in your hair in order to reset your hair growth to the shape and placement of your choosing.

What to expect from the results of brow lamination

Brow lamination can give your brows a fuller, more defined and perfectly groomed appearance. In this treatment the brows are smoothed and straightened, making this the perfect solution for anyone with curly or unruly brows. Lamination can help reshape the brows by lifting them and redirecting the growth pattern which can result in a more flattering arch, as well as disguise any gaps or sparse areas in the brows.

You can expect much less daily maintenance after brow lamination since the treated hairs will need much less brow gel to hold them in place! We recommend brushing them up each night with your aftercare serum and once in the morning with brow gel, and you’re good to go all day!

How long does brow lamination last?

The tricky part about brow lamination is figuring out how long the process will last for each individual person. The longevity of this treatment is heavily dependent on your hair growth cycle. Since the chemical process used during your lamination session permanently reshapes each individual brow hair, the results will last until your hairs shed and are replaced by new growth. On average this can take around 4 to 8 weeks if the appropriate aftercare is followed. Most of our clients get at least 5-6 weeks with proper aftercare!

Are there any contraindications to brow lamination?

For most there are no side effects for this non-invasive process. However, there are certain conditions your esthetician will ask you about prior to your appointment.

brow lamination results

First and foremost, if you’re using products containing retinol or vitamin A, you’re going to want to discontinue use for about a week before and after treatment. Additionally, individuals with skin conditions such as eczema or breakouts in the eyebrow area should refrain from laminating their brows as it could worsen pre-existing conditions.

If you’re ever unsure, reach out to your esthetician and they can provide insight, as well as conduct a patch test to keep your safety a top priority. Lastly, we do not recommend this treatment for pregnant women. We advise getting this service a few months postpartum due to the hormones affecting the perm results.

The brow lamination process step by step

If you’ve made it this far because you’re interested in the benefits of getting your brows laminated, we’re so excited to hear that! Below we’ve taken the time to break down the steps behind the lamination process so that you arrive at your appointment both excited and well informed.

Step 1: Cleanse the treatment area

To begin, your brow tech is going to clean the brow area with a mild cleanser. Removing dirt and accumulated body oil from the hairs ensures that the lamination process goes as smoothly and effectively as possible.

Step 2: Relax cream

Once clean, the esthetician will place the first cream in a set of solutions onto your brows. The first cream is going to break down bonds in your eyebrow hairs, allowing it to be more malleable. After the cream is allowed to set, your brow tech will begin to place your hairs in a way that matches your preference, as well as your face shape.

Step 3: Setting cream

Now that your desired shape has been formed, the next cream will be applied to your set brows. This cream, known as the setting cream, will rebuild the bonds in your hair, freezing the position of each individual brow hair in place.

Step 4: Stray hairs are removed

Any stray hairs that do not fit the look of your newly pampered brows will be removed. The last thing you’d want from your treatment is to leave your lamination session with eyebrows that are not perfectly shaped!

Step 5: Hydration & keratin conditioner

Although this treatment is completely safe for your brows, it’s always good to finish off your lamination session with a replenishing and hydrating keratin conditioner. Not only will it add strength back into your brows, it can help individuals with sensitive skin avoid any dry patches or skin irritation following their service.

If you’re interested, ask your esthetician about adding a brow tint to your service for the full manicured look!

Brow lamination aftercare tips

Similar to a normal perm, it’s important that you avoid any type of water exposure for the first 24 hours following your lamination treatment. Additionally, try to avoid rubbing or touching your eyebrows – that includes applying makeup to the area as well – for the first 24 hours. If you’re not sure how to properly care for your brows, your esthetician should leave you with helpful tips and product recommendations to prolong the look of your new, beautiful brows.
