Waxing Facial Hair: What To Expect From an Appointment
Removing unwanted facial hair is just a part of life. Most of us have either shaved, tweezed, or bleached hairs that pop up unexpectedly.
Even if you’ve had your brows done before, a facial waxing session might be unfamiliar to you. But it’s a great way to remove unwanted facial hair in one sitting.
For longer-lasting, consistent results, waxing is our choice in controlling our unwanted facial hair. And it’s not just about getting rid of a mustache! There are some surprising benefits to this procedure.
Join us as we take a closer look at waxing facial hair.
Why should you wax your facial hair?
There are so many different ways people try to remove unwanted facial hair that just don’t work. Sure, shaving, tweezing, and creams might do the job for a few days. But hair always grows back faster than you want it to. The main reason is that they only remove hair from the surface and not from the root.
Waxing works so well on facial hair because we remove it from deep beneath the skin’s surface. After it’s gone, it usually takes several weeks to grow back. During that time, you’ll enjoy a smoother, younger-looking face. And it’s not just about getting rid of darker, thicker hairs either. Different hair types, like vellus hair, are all over the surface of your face, and waxing removes them in one session.
What parts of your face can typically be waxed?
While eyebrow waxing and upper lip are the most common, any surface that grows hair is up for grabs. Other parts commonly waxed include the sideburns, neck, forehead, chin, ears, cheeks, and nose.
Especially if you wear makeup regularly, removing peach fuzz provides a smooth surface to work with.
Facial waxing gets rid of all your hair in one go
As we mentioned, several hair removal methods only get a bit at a time. You might shave your upper lip, but you’re not likely to shave every surface on your face. Waxing is a one-and-done proposition. Once you let your esthetician know your goals, they can quickly and efficiently remove all your unwanted facial hair.
A side benefit of the procedure is exfoliation. Dead skin cells dull your complexion and clog your pores. Waxing removes them and reveals a glowing, healthier-looking surface.
The results of waxing are long lasting compared to other hair removal methods
Surface-level methods only last for a few days before you’ve got to go back and start over again. As a facial hair removal method, waxing is more effective because it removes hair from the root. After your first session, you’ll have smoother skin for up to four weeks before your next session.
Over time, your follicles die off, and you’ll see a reduction in hair growth. At that point, you might be able to go six to eight weeks between waxing sessions. Your razor can’t compete with these results!
How to get ready for a facial wax appointment
Preparing for a facial waxing appointment looks very similar to a thorough skincare routine. You’ll want to lay off some of your more intense home treatments like retinoids and chemical exfoliants. Here’s the best protocol for getting ready for your facial waxing session.
Prepare according to your esthetician’s guidelines
Your best bet is to check with your esthetician for their recommendations. There are lots of tips online, but they’re a great source of information. Avoid exfoliating your face for at least 3 days prior to your appointment and discontinue the use of topical vitamin A (Retinol) for at least 10 days. Activated serums and some moisturizers can compromise your skin’s surface and should be avoided.
If you’re in an active breakout, you’ll be asked to reschedule because waxing can cause it to spread. And, when smoother skin is your goal, that’s the last thing you want.
Check and see if your hair length is not too short
All waxing services require hair to be a certain length before your session. Just like body waxing, facial hair should have a quarter inch of growth for the wax to work properly. Hair length matters because if it’s too short, it could break below the surface and lead to ingrown hairs.
Common concerns about facial waxing
While body waxing might be more familiar to you, facial waxing might not be. Being concerned about how your face will respond to the treatment is normal. Additionally, the skin on your face is very sensitive and likely has some skin concerns that differ from more robust tissue.
We’ve got answers to some of the most common questions here for you!
Can you wax your face with active acne?
Waxing works well on all skin types when done properly. Acne-prone skin can be safely waxed as long as there isn’t an active breakout. In fact, some people see a benefit from waxing because it encourages cell turnover through exfoliation. But if you’re in the midst of a breakout, the bacteria causing it can spread if disrupted by waxing.
If only some areas of your face are broken out, your esthetician can avoid these areas during your treatment. For widespread issues, give your skin a break before coming in for your waxing session.
How much will facial waxing cost?
The cost of your treatment varies depending on how much of your skin we’ll treat. At 1845 Esthetics, we offer several different options for facial waxing. You can piece it out with lip, nose, ears, sideburns, and chin for between $14 and $16 for each zone. Or, we offer a full-face service that covers all of these zones and more for $60.
Will the process of facial waxing take long?
Each client has unique needs that may require a bit longer than others, but usually, it takes around 20 minutes for a full face wax. As you add other services, though, it can prolong your session. Remember that you’ll enjoy the benefits from your session for many weeks so that 20-minute session pays off!
