Waxing Aftercare: Best Practices for Healthy Skin

Congrats! You made it through your waxing session – and hopefully you’re feeling as fabulous as you are! Now that you’ve completed the “hard part”, let’s get you set up for the perfect skin following your waxing session.

In this guide we’ll cover the importance of aftercare, what you can do to avoid getting any additional irritation or ingrown hairs, and support smooth, healthy skin!

Why is waxing aftercare important?

Ingrown hairs and irritating bumps happen as a result of improper waxing aftercare, or lack thereof. If you’re not sold on the impact that taking care of your skin following your wax will have, let’s take a look at three important reasons behind incorporating aftercare into your post-wax routine.

Aftercare is important to avoid any negative side effects

If you’re paying for smooth, hair free skin, why risk the negative side effects associated with not taking care of it following your wax? Most negative side effects of waxing come from improper preparation and little to no attention to aftercare recommendations laid out by wax technicians.

Results last longer during an aftercare routine

Helping your skin pays off in the long run. When you properly care for it, your smooth skin and hair free results will last longer than if you were to let nature take its course. Not only will participating in aftercare give you smoother skin for longer, it can also result in the delay of your hair growth cycle over time.

Your skin will be more sensitive after waxing

Sensitive skin comes with the territory when finishing up a wax. A large portion of aftercare is tending to your skin and making sure that any irritation is minimized so that you’re left with smooth skin. After all, irritating skin opens the door to ingrown hairs and angry bumps, and we do not want that!

The do’s and don'ts of waxing aftercare

Now, to the important part of it all: what to do and what not to do following your wax. Think of these suggestions as guidelines to get you through to just the type of supple skin you’ve been looking forward to.

Make sure to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes

Often overlooked, it is important to consider what you’re wearing to your appointment. If your preference is to wear tight, form-fitting clothes, you may find that your skin will react poorly. Tight clothes tend to brush the newly waxed skin repeatedly over the few hours it may take for you to get home. To prevent any discomfort and irritation, wear loose, breathable clothes for your appointment and for the day(s) following.

Do not pick up a razor anytime soon

If you prefer consistently hair free skin, there’s no doubt that picking up a razor could be tempting – especially if you havent gotten into the groove of routine waxes. While tempting, it’s important to avoid shaving between your waxing sessions as it not only increases the risk of ingrown hairs, it also sets back your progress towards thinner, slower hair regrowth.

Avoid excessive sun exposure

Did you know that waxing serves as a mild exfoliant? While this leaves your skin looking bright and healthy, it also leaves it more susceptible to UV exposure. To avoid any damage, apply SPF and try to stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible for 48-72 hours post wax. .

Exercise and any other physical activity should be on hold

For the first few days following your appointment, you’re going to want to avoid strenuous activity – that includes intimate time with a partner and going to the gym. Sweat and friction could cause a number of problems for your freshly waxed skin, so avoid hot baths and sun beds, too.

Heavy cosmetics should be avoided during your aftercare

Heavy creams, strong perfumes, and body sprays can irritate the skin. For at least two days following your appointment, avoid any heavy cosmetics that have not been approved by your wax technician.

Follow a skincare routine for healthy skin

One of the best ways to prevent ingrown hairs is to follow a great skincare routine. Moisturizer keeps your skin hydrated and allows hair, when it grows back, to not get caught underneath your skin. Follow a routine of exfoliating 2 to 3 times a week. This sheds buildup of dead skin cells, dirt, and knocks any ingrown hairs loose as they come in.

Talk to your wax specialist about products to avoid or apply

When it boils down to it, don't be afraid to ask! Our job, as professionals, is to guide you through the ins and outs of waxing. Your wax technician should be able to go over what products will work for your skin, as well as what to avoid.
