How Long Does Waxing Really Last?

Enjoyed by many, waxing has become a popular hair removal method for nearly every area of the body. Praised for its long lasting results when compared to the benefits of shaving, waxing is sure to take the cake when it comes to long lasting, glowy, hair free skin – but how long does it really last?

On average, waxing results last somewhere between three and four weeks. However, there are several factors that can influence your expected timeline! Let’s go over what you can expect, and how you can get the most out of your waxing results.

Factors that affect a waxing duration

The length of time your wax is anticipated to last can be dependent on a few different factors. In order to make the most out of your session, it is important to know what plays a role in the rate at which your hair regrows.

Your genetics – how fast does your hair usually grow?

Genetics play a pivotal role in determining how long a person can enjoy the benefits of hair-free skin after a wax appointment. When it comes down to it, the rate at which hair tends to grow is largely influenced by individual genetic factors. Some may have hair that grows at a slower pace, while others with a genetic predisposition for faster hair growth rate may find that results don’t last as long.

What area are you getting waxed?

Did you know that certain areas of the body come with their own unique growth cycles? For example, the hair on your head grows at a much different pace than the hair on your legs. Each hair growth cycle is dependent on the length of the growth phase and resting phase which can change based on the hair’s location on the body.

How much experience does your esthetician have?

One factor that may seem interesting for most to learn is that the experience level of their licensed esthetician can impact the overall longevity of the service. Yes, the growth rate of your hair can be manipulated (to an extent) by your esthetician that’s skilled in the art of waxing. With time and experience comes an understanding of the hair regrowth cycle, as well as how to apply and remove wax in a strategic way to prolong results.

How often do you get waxed?

Another factor that can influence the length of your results is the frequency in which your sessions are spaced. Individuals who choose to wax once every few months will not see the consistent longevity that those who wax on a consistent schedule do. Routine waxing sessions can ensure your results last longer, and that regrowth is thinner and sparser.

Is waxing the best hair removal service, time-wise?

When it comes to one of our more valuable resources, time, waxing can prove to be beneficial when compared to other hair removal methods.

Shaving has to be done more often

Although shaving is simple and generally costs less, the frequency in which hair needs to be removed can make it a less than ideal option for those with limited time. Since hair is cut at the surface level instead of being pulled directly from the hair root, new growth appears faster and needs to be done more frequently in order to maintain hair free skin. Waxing can help make your results last longer by removing individual strands from their roots.

Laser hair removal has long waiting periods between sessions

While laser offers semi-permanent results, it also comes with a tradeoff: repeated sessions spaced far apart. Since the laser treatment has to work around your hair’s growth cycles, it will take a number of months before you officially see results.

Additionally, laser is much more costly than waxing, and contrary to popular belief, doesn’t guarantee permanent results. After a few years, hair growth often recurs following laser hair removal.

Ways to make waxing results last longer

Love your wax and want to keep your skin looking smooth and hair free? Consider following these guidelines for optimal results.

Exfoliate between wax appointments

Ingrown hairs? Not if we can help it! Keep your skin looking fresh and silky soft by routinely exfoliating 2 to 3 times a week. Removing the buildup of dry skin and body oil can help keep your hair follicles happy and healthy. Wait at least 72 hours post-wax to exfoliate and begin your routine.

Wear loose fitted clothing to avoid irritation

Following your wax, always make sure to plan ahead by wearing loose fitting clothing. Clothing that is too tight can cause irritation and breakouts on the skin.

Follow your esthetician’s post wax instructions

Most importantly, always be sure to get customized recommendations from your waxing specialist. Follow their guidelines, utilize ingrown hair serum, avoid sun exposure, and come back for your next appointment when your hair is at least a quarter inch long to a half inch to make the most of your appointments.
